Food Loss and Waste and how you can play your part: The $1.3 trillion global issue of Food Loss & Waste (FLW) is increasingly gaining prominence in Australia. Local FLW estimates are as high as 42% of all food produced in Australia is either lost (pre-consumer) or wasted (by consumers), amounting to near $50 billion in direct losses. The Australian Department of Environment and Energy is currently in the process of developing a National Food Waste Strategy, due for release in early 2018. It will commit Australia to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels by 2030. Industry will play a critical role in Australia achieving the SDG. Importantly, FLW reduction by industry makes economic sense, with the World Resources Institute recently reporting that on average food waste reduction delivered a 14X Return on Investment for the 700 companies involved in their study. The role of packaging in reducing food waste will also be of critical importance, and will be a key platform of the proposed Fight Food Waste & Fraud Cooperative Research Centre. The talk will highlight our current knowledge on food waste in Australia, and what industry can do to play their part in achieving SDG 12.3.
